The map displays the population distribution of each iwi as a shaded territorial authority (TA) geographic unit. A drop-down menu lists all iwi that were recorded in the 2013 census and allows the selection of one iwi at a time. Two data normalisation buttons allow for a comparison of iwi population data as a percentage of total Maori population per TA or as a percentage of total iwi population per TA.
QGIS software was used to convert census territorial authority shape files into geoJSON outlines while retaining their existing attributes, such as the IDs. Iwi population census data correlating to each ID was converted to JSON format, and then both the data file and the geoJSON were uploaded to a web server where the map dynamically updates based on user selection.
The population data from the 2013 New Zealand census is publicly available from Statistics New Zealand and was retrieved through the NZ.stat tool.
